7/7 investigation 'not over' and more may face charges, police say

28 April 2009

MORE people could face charges over the 7 July suicide bomb plot, police have said.

The investigation – the largest mounted by the Metropolitan Police - is still live and officers believe that many more people were involved with the attacks.

Some of the fingerprints found at the bomb factories used by bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan, Germaine Lindsay, Hasib Hussain and Shehzad Tanweer have yet to be identified.

One senior officer said: "This is the largest investigation ever carried out by the Metropolitan Police. Every clue and lead was, and is still being, tracked down.

"There were a large number of fingerprints at the bomb factories - the vast bulk belonged to the bombers but others are still unknown.

"The message should go out that we will go to the nth degree and pursue anyone who we think is involved in a plot against this country."

In the course of the investigation, officers have taken 18,450 statements, produced 37,000 exhibits and 19,400 documents, and noted 24,000 identities.

But to date only Waheed Ali, 25, Sadeer Saleem, 28, and Mohammed Shaki, 32, all from Leeds, have been charged in connection with the attacks. A retrial jury at Kingston Crown Court found them not guilty of conspiring with the bombers by organising a reconnaissance trip to London. The men admitted knowing the bombers but denied helping them.

Ali and Shakil were found guilty of a second charge of plotting to attend a terrorism training camp in Pakistan, and will be sentenced on Wednesday.
