Firefighters 'pulled out' of flat blaze

An emergency motion is to be presented to Southwark Council asking for the blaze to be investigated to ensure that 'serious lessons may be learnt'

PRESSURE is mounting for a public inquiry into a fatal tower block fire in Camberwell, which claimed six lives.

An emergency council motion is to be presented to a Southwark council meeting calling for an investigation into the fire that ripped through a block of flats on the Sceaux Gardens Estate on Friday.

Cllr Ian Wingfield is urging that "a full and independent public inquiry be held at the earliest possible opportunity".

"Council Assembly believes that there may be serious lessons to be learnt from these tragic events, which will be relevant to similar buildings in Southwark and those owned by other local authorities and housing bodies across the country," the meeting is to be told.

Dayana Francisquini, 26, and children Thais, six, and Filipe, three, were killed on the 11th floor of Lakanal House as well as Helen Udoaka, 34, and her three-week-old daughter Michelle and 31-year-old Catherine Hickman.

Earlier this week, local MP Harriet Harman backed calls for a public inquiry into fire safety in high-rise buildings after the tower block blaze.

Police forensic officers and fire investigators are still searching Lakanal House to find the cause of the fire and discover why it spread so quickly.

Several residents have described the complicated layout of the tower block, which had undergone a £3m refurbishment programme two years ago, as "a maze", which made the evacuation difficult.
