M&S model Natalie Suliman works with at-risk teens

Islington model behind Marks & Spencer's successful underwear campaign is youth worker in deprived areas

16 June 2009

SHE has been turning heads as the body behind Marks & Spencer’s racy lingerie campaign.

But there's more to London model Natalie Suliman than that. She has revealed how she helps turn teenagers’ lives around, too.

The 23-year-old’s perfect breasts have been plastered all over billboards, magazines and newspapers during the M&S campaign.

The traffic-stopping ads have evoked memories of Eva Herzigova’s Hello Boys Wonderbra ad from 1994.

The blaze of publicity has helped Suliman, from Islington, become the capital’s hottest pin-up and send sales of M&S lingerie soaring.

But the glamour girl hasn't simply sat back in her frilly knickers. She still helps at-risk kids in some of London’s most deprived areas.

Natalie told how she was deeply affected by the knife murder of Ben Kinsella, 16, last year.

"I come from a single mother, working-class background and there are a lot of young people coming from the same place"

She said: “I know the Kinsella family as I live down the road from them. I was at school with his sisters Brooke and Jade.

“He was a very loved, very popular boy. As someone from Islington, working with deprived teens in north London, I saw the devastating effects of his murder.

“That’s why I feel strongly about what I do for the youth service.

“I used to work on a participation project for the council, getting people from deprived backgrounds involved in decision-making and helping them to speak out rather than just letting the Government do it.

“I still run a girl’s group on a Thursday night if I’m around. It’s a workshop for young women.

“I went to one and it probably gave me more opportunities than school. I come from a single-mother, working-class background and there are a lot of young people coming from the same place.

“With Ben Kinsella, I saw a lot of young people in Islington come together afterwards. I went down to the march for him at the town hall. It really shows that people care. It was a horrible thing that happened.”
