Sunday Skyride in Hounslow

Get out of your cars and see the best of the west as the roads in Hounslow are cleared for the London Skyride - 10,000 cyclists are due to take part in the 10km event

5 August 2009

THE roads of a big stretch of west London will be cleared of cars this Sunday for a mass cycle ride.

Bikes will have free rein on roads in Hounslow for the Skyride, which will take a 10km route through parks and past historic buildings. Organisers are promising a “carnival atmosphere” with 10,000 cyclists taking part.

From 11am to 4pm, cyclists of all ages and abilities will hit the streets, joined by Beijing Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Jamie Staff.

Staff said: “Cycling is going through a brilliant period after success in last year’s Olympics and this year’s Tour de France. We want to keep that going, and hopefully events like the Skyride can inspire people to get on their bikes and maybe encourage kids to become the next generation of medal winners.”

Mayor Boris Johnson added: “The Skyride event will allow people from across the capital to discover this hidden gem of west London. Those that take part will experience the fun of cycling free from interference from cars, sharing in a celebration of the bike – the greenest way of getting about town.”

For those wanting to cycle to the event, there are led rides, departing at 10.30am, from Feltham railway station in Hounslow, Bushy Park in Teddington, Ravenscourt Park in Hammersmith, Ealing Town Hall and Barra Hall Park in Hayes.

Crowds will be entertained throughout the day in Syon Park, which looks across the river to Kew Gardens.

British Cycling and broadcaster Sky aim to get a million more people cycling in the next five years.

On 20 September, traffic will be banished from central London for the Mayor of London’s Skyride, which will take riders along the Embankment and through the City of London.

Organisers say it will run more smoothly if people sign up, but all will be welcome to join in on the day.
