BRITAIN is to support a ban on the international trade in bluefin tuna, after a high-profile campaign by film stars including Greta Scacchi, Sienna Miller and Charlize Theron.

Fisheries Minister Huw Irranca-Davies confirmed the country will join France and Monaco in calling for the fish to be listed on the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites).

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) predicted bluefin tuna breeding stock could disappear by 2012. Irranca-Davies said: “The UK supports calls to list bluefin tuna [on Cites]. This follows growing public concern about the perilous state of bluefin tuna stock.

“We encourage other member states to support this proposal.”

Dr Sergi Tudela, head of fisheries at WWF Mediterranean, said the species was “at the end of its tether” and could be “lost forever” if “the world does not put the brakes on its voracious appetite”.

thelondonpaper has been running our Know the True Price of Fish campaign to pressure London restaurants into using only sustainable fish.

A string of restaurants has agreed to review menus but sushi specialist Nobu, which has two London branches, refuses to budge.

A restaurant spokeswoman said: “We allow our guests to make up their own minds.”
