New green vision for the capital to be unveiled in Lambeth
31 March 2009
A NEW green vision for London which aims to help people enjoy the environment, get fit, boost wildlife and make new developments more ecologically sensitive is being unveiled today.
Natural England, the Government's conservation body, will announce its plans today to improve the quality of life for Londoners.
The new plans involve work to improve the management of inner city natural landscapes and encouraging the public to use them.
Alison Barnes, Natural England's regional director for London, said: "The natural environment matters to everyone in London.
"A healthy natural environment is an essential asset that provides the foundations for our prosperity and wellbeing."
Natural green space will also be secured around places of work and people will be encouraged to walk more within their local communities.
Mayor Boris Johnson said: "The launch of Natural London provides a valuable contribution on how to improve and promote London's natural green spaces, as well as helping the capital prepare for the future effects of climate change on our parks and wildlife.
"London is one of the greenest cities in the world and one of my key priorities is maintaining and nurturing this position."
The vision for the capital's wild and green places was launched today at the Natural London launch event at Roots and Shoots educational centre in Lambeth.
