Mayor Boris Johnson pledges to make London the cleanest, greenest city on earth
Vow to give capital best environmental credentials in world by 2012
18 May 2009
BORIS Johnson today pledged to make London the “cleanest, greenest city on earth” at a summit of city leaders.
The Mayor promised that the capital would lead the world in becoming an environmentally friendly city by the 2012 Games.
The heads of the world’s 40 largest cities are in South Korean capital Seoul for the talks on combating global warming.
Johnson said: "I don’t want to walk away with a communiqué which contains nothing but warm words and hot air... it's important we agree some specific measures."
He said London would use the Olympics "to drive the greening and the improvement of our city" and noted the city is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.
But London Assembly green member Jenny Jones claimed the Mayor was guilty of double standards by flying to the summit.
She said: "Why couldn’t the Mayor save money, and carbon emissions, by doing his speech via video link?"
