Homes in Barking and Dagenham to be given free recycling lessons
23 April 2009
TEAMS of “litter police” will go house-to-house to teach families how to recycle their rubbish.
Barking and Dagenham Council has launched a £2m drive to save the planet – and avoid being hit with hefty Government fines for sending too much rubbish to landfill sites – by making visits to families in the borough, which has the capital’s worst record on recycling.
Introducing the scheme – including purchasing almost 100,000 new wheelie bins – will cost £2.1m and running it will cost more than £300,000 a year.
“Waste education officers” will offer tutorials on using the bins after a pilot last year involving 8,500 families resulted in a 15 per cent drop in the amount of rubbish thrown away. Each family got a 140-litre bin for litter, and a second bin for garden waste. They were told no other rubbish would be collected.
A council spokesman said: “Wheelie bins are hygienic and practical. We believe they will encourage residents to recycle.”
