Greening of the East End
Greening of the East End
Ken Livingstone has announced a major plan to transform East London by giving it a green makeover.
The Mayor launched new planning guides to help deliver a network of open spaces and parks – dubbed the Green Grid – to future generations of Cockneys.
Its aim is to create a network of inter-linked, multi-functional open spaces that connect with town centres, transport links, countryside, the Thames and employment and residential areas.
Speaking at the Thames Gateway Forum, Livingstone said: “As London grows, particularly with the 2012 Games and the wider Thames Gateway regeneration plans, access to quality open space will increasingly be at a premium.
“It is essential that we firmly place the principles behind the Green Grid into the heart of all our planning now to create well-designed green and accessible public spaces within and around the new homes and infrastructures.”
Jenny Jones, Green Party London Assembly member, said: “The Green Grid will be good for the environment, the soul and house prices.
“It will enable people living in East London to breathe, relax and move around in a pleasant environment and will create something in East London which people in leafy Richmond take for granted.”
Plans for a greener Thames Gateway were also unveiled by Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly.
Kelly announced that that Thames Gateway Interim Plan will lay down the foundations to create the conditions for 180,000 new jobs and 160,000 new homes over the next ten years, with over a third designated as affordable housing.
The regenerated area could contribute up to £12 billion a year to the UK economy.
