Greenpeace achieve ultimate coal with latest eco-piracy stunt

Climate change protesters arrested after boarding coal ship in protest at plans for 'dirtiest' power station

22 June 2009

CLIMATE change campaigners were today locked in a stand-off with police after they boarded a coal ship in protest at plans for a new coal-fired power station.

The Greenpeace activists scaled the ship with enough food and water to last several days. A spokesman said that nine protesters approached on inflatable speedboats and boarded the ship on the River Medway in north Kent.

Others swam in the river trying to stop the ship docking at Kingsnorth power station, which is next to the site of a proposed coal-fired plant, on the Hoo Peninsula.

"We have enough food and water to last several days. Scientists are telling us we can’t beat climate change if we keep burning coal, and yet [climate change minister] Ed Miliband’s new policies would allow E.ON to build the dirtiest power station in Britain for 30 years"

Kent Police said six people had so far been arrested – and are being held at Medway police station – and that the ship had docked successfully. Four protesters are said to be still on board the vessel.

One of the nine who scaled the ship, Sarah Shoraka, 31, said they were protesting against plans by energy giant E.ON to build a new coal-fired power plant.

She said: “We have enough food and water to last several days. Scientists are telling us we can’t beat climate change if we keep burning coal, and yet [climate change minister] Ed Miliband’s new policies would allow E.ON to build the dirtiest power station in Britain for 30 years.”

E.ON said it respected the right of people to protest but branded Greenpeace’s stunt “dangerous”.
