Appeal after world-class bike stolen in London

Cyclist Tim Brewer, who peddled 31,000km around the world, is appealing to thelondonpaper’s readers after having his bike stolen in Hackney

A LONDON cyclist who pedalled 31,000km round the world is appealing to thelondonpaper's readers to find his trusted bike, which was stolen in Hackney this week.

During his 22-month journey, Tim Brewer, 25, survived 45C heat in an Indian desert and monsoons in Malaysia. He rode through 30 countries, at times surviving by drinking from puddles and eating curried brain.

Since returning home in June last year, the call centre supervisor from Hackney had been using his beloved mountain bike to commute to the centre of town – but it was stolen from a stairwell outside his sister’s flat in Kingsland Road on Tuesday.

Brewer, who is studying for a master’s degree in globalisation, said: “The bike has such sentimental value for me, it is simply irreplaceable. So many memories are associated with it. It’s a cliche, but losing it felt like losing a limb. I would be overjoyed to recover it.”

The bike is a silver Koga-Miyata World Traveller, with curved handlebars and a worn leather saddle.

Brewer weighed almost 20 stone when he set off from his family home in Dartford, Kent, for Sydney in 2006.

He said his family and friends were stunned when he announced he was leaving to cycle to Australia. The first day on the road he managed just 50km – and needed three days to recover. But soon he was covering up to 255km a day.

If you spot the bike, call police on 020 7275 3159 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or email news@thelondonpaper.com
