Stella McCartney and Ali Hewson in nude battle
Ali Hewson - wife of U2 singer Bono - is suing Stella McCartney over the right to use the word 'nude' in their designer ranges
12 August 2009
STELLA MCCARTNEY is being sued by Bono’s wife over the name she has given to her new eau de toilette fragrance, Stella Nude, which is going on sale next month.
Ali Hewson, who is the co-founder and part-owner of beauty company Nude Skincare, wants compensation because she says her company owns the rights to the “Nude” brand.
A writ has been issued and the case is due to come before the Chancery division of the High Court in the coming months.
A spokeswoman for Stella McCartney said: "We can confirm that proceedings have been issued by Nude brands against both YSL Beaute (part of L'Oreal), the licensee for our fragrance and beauty business, and Stella McCartney Limited.
"We can confirm that the allegations are being defended vigorously on our side.
"The Stella McCartney brand is continuing to grow and expand across the various facets of the business."
Nude Skincare declined to comment today.
The dispute may prove awkward for U2's Nobel Peace Prize nominee Bono and Stella’s father, former Beatle Paul McCartney, who share common interests in trying to alleviate suffering in the developing world.
