Madonna fans angered by tube closures that will affect her O2 Arena gigs
Queen of Pop's Sticky and Sweet tour hit by Jubilee Line suspensions
3 July 2009
MADONNA fans were furious today after realising that her American Independence Day gig at the O2 Arena tomorrow [Sat] will be hit by a Tube suspension.
The Jubilee Line will not run between Green Park and Stratford, forcing thousands onto replacement buses.
A carnival atmosphere had been expected at the Fourth of July show , with London’s expat American community out in numbers to celebrate their national holiday.
But instead, fans face the prospect of having to leave early to ensure they make transport connections.
And for those going to her gig on Sunday night, getting to and from the O2 Arena will be even harder as the whole Jubilee line will be out of action.
But despite the travel woes, front row seats for the Sticky & Sweet tour were today changing hands for up to £300.
One fan said: "To all the lucky people going to the Madonna concert’s at the 02 this weekend, our dear friends at TfL have in their great wisdom and vision decided not to run any trains to the 02, so please allow lots of extra time to get there to avoid any disappointment, ie missing the start of the show!"
Another said: "Every time I’ve been to the O2 the Jubilee line’s been f*****. When will they sort it out?"
Travellers also face disruption to the District, Metropolitan, Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Northern Lines over the weekend.
The O2 Arena said fans heading to the gig could take a water taxi or the DLR to the performance.
A spokeswoman said: "The situation is not ideal, but the TfL work on the Jubilee line over the next six months will lead to a more efficient line. TfL are working closely with The O2 to ensure we get our customers home as quickly and as easily as possible."
A spokeswoman for TfL added: "Tube, London Overground, London Tramlink and Docklands Light Railway improvement works will inevitably result in some disruption for passengers, but TfL is working hard to provide information and alternative travel options. The work is essential to provide for London’s growing transport needs now and into the future."
