Star Trek movie 'a geek dream come true', says actor Simon Pegg at London premiere

20 April 2009

SIMON PEGG attended the UK premiere of Star Trek at Leicester Square, declaring it was a "geek dream come true".

Pegg, who donned a kilt for the event, is one of the stars of the movie, which features a young new crew venturing boldly where no one has gone before.

A blue carpet, smoke machines and fans wearing Spock ears added to the space-like effects.

Pegg said: "For me, tonight is very special. It's the Empire Leicester Square. I saw films here as a child ... it's a geek dream come true."

Pegg said that the weight of the past was on the new characters a little bit, but said he had played his own version of his role.

He said: "I love the Star Trek fan base. They are world leaders in positivity."

He said it was not silly to dress up, adding: "It's brilliant. Anyone who looks down on it is cynical."

Pegg, who plays Scotty in the movie, said he was inspired to dress up by the Scottish side of his family.

Actor Karl Urban, who plays Dr Leonard "Bones" McCoy, described the film as "phenomenal".

He said: "This is a film for everybody, not just long-term Trek fans."

The premiere, attended by celebrities including Jonathan Ross, who donned a black leather jacket and sunglasses, took place in aid of The Prince's Trust.

The trust helps to change young lives in the UK through practical and financial support.

It was founded by the Prince of Wales in 1976 and has helped more than 575,000 young people across the UK.

Star Trek goes on general release on 8 May.
