Video games review: Wii Sports Resort
The Nintendo Wii's original Wii Sports gets a makeover with new games and, more importantly, improved controls in the form of Wii Motion Plus support...
27 July 2009
THE Wii is back! Well, sort of. Wii Sports Resort is a deluxe remix of what is technically the best-selling video game of all time, Wii Sports (a bit of a cheat, as it was bundled with the Wii and so the figure piggybacks on system sales).
This time, however, the game is bundled with the Wii MotionPlus add-on – a chunk of plastic which, when clipped on to the Wiimote, allows for more complexity of movement.
Now, rather than roughly recognising that you’re swinging the Wiimote up, down and around, it feels like every subtle jink, spin and rotation is accurately mirrored on-screen.
While the original Wii Sports featured five games, Resort boasts 12.

The most satisfying are the ones with intuitive control (frisbee, swordplay, golf, archery, bowling).
The next tier requires a bit of learning time (power cruising, basketball, cycling, canoeing, wakeboarding).
All the games sparkle with that typical Nintendo charm and design ethic (easy to get into, but deep and devious beneath the surface) and it’s a belly-laughing, WiiMote-ducking, delight in multi-player mode. The standout event is table tennis – tense, twitchy, reflexive and beautifully tuned to the MotionPlus (every spin, chop and smash feels faithfully translated from wrist to screen).
But why no tennis? The original’s was fun, but it was doubles only. Given the success of the MotionPlus-table tennis marriage, would it have been so tough to include an enhanced take on tennis?
Another moan: the air sports game is little more than an odd skydiving demo. One of Nintendo’s most-loved franchises – Pilotwings – is howling for a Wii version.
Air sports is a winking, wiggly, glossy-lipsticked tease – proof that a Wii Pilotwings would work wonderfully.
Other than that, however, this really is a sporty delight.
