The DS dominates this week’s reviews with Rhythm Paradise and Pokemon Platinum

5 May 2009

JUST as the DS appears to be running on empty with no major games on the horizon, Nintendo roars in with an unexpected instant classic. Rhythm Paradise (DS) is a simple but fiendishly compulsive rhythm action-type game (the same species as Guitar Hero or the iPhone TapTap series). You tap, hold, flick, and slide the DS pointer through a series of simple mini games, building up “flow” by getting a feel for the music and staying in the groove. There’s a Wario Ware-like feel to the game themes (swimming, racing, synchronising with monkeys). The first time you play will be a bit of a fumble, but you can refine your score on return visits and access the hardcore rhythm.

Also on DS is Pokemon Platinum. We lost touch with the Pokemon empire about six years ago, so we asked an eight-year-old (no, really) if it was any good… "It’s the best Pokemon game yet. It has better graphics, you can play mini games and explore more. The Pokemon have more moves and they’re more mystical." So there you go.
