The perfect hit for all those who have finished The Wire and need another fix, David Simon’s first show was this hard-hitting six-part HBO mini-series.

Based on the year Simon spent living in a Baltimore neighbourhood, chronicling the drug-ravaged lives of the inhabitants through the prism of a single corner, it may lack the over-arching scope of The Wire, but remains that rare thing: TV that you genuinely feel you have learnt something from.

Missed it on Channel 4? Catch up with the year’s best TV so far with this brilliant star-studded adaptation of David Peace’s dark Yorkshire-set trilogy. Confusing, yes, but unlike anything else on the small screen.
