Hot new artist alert - Frankmusik
Hot in 2009! Meet Radio 1's speedster darling Frankmusik
8 December 2008
Clearly you’re one of the best new acts of 2009, so why aren’t you waiting to release your debut single until then?
Mostly because I have been putting stuff on MySpace, giving too much away. I’ve done over 40 remixes in the past year... Paul Weller, CSS, Bloc Party...
How, at just 23 years old, are you already remixing for these guys?
The main thing is being prolific and maintaining a high standard. And I’m a complete control freak – it’s put me in hospital, anxiety and stuff.
What can you tell us about Frankmusik?
It’s been a year-and-a-half since Frankmusik started. I’d taken a while finding the right producer to work with, experimented with a couple of people, and then we found Stuart Price. It’s been amazing. It’s taken some time because, of course, he’s been doing The Killers’ record.
So, are you the new Mika? That’s what I’ve heard...
The only similarities we have are we both sing very high and we’re men. I think I need to let this one rest. Someone from The Guardian described me as “Mika on acid”. I think describing anyone with drug terminology is always bad.
Your new single Three Little Words is mental. It sounds like you might have cloned Nick Rhodes to battle himself in a synth-off to the death
I think it’s one of the fastest songs on the radio. It clocks in at 171 beats per minute, and drum and bass is at 160. So you can’t really dance to it – or if you did, you really would have to be on a lot of sugar.
What’s this about you hearing Three Little Words on Radio 1 and deciding to quit?
I was very, very drunk when I heard it and I was like, “this just doesn’t make any sense, it’s great for me but doesn’t fit the market”. Something snapped and I got very scared, very quickly. I wanted to chuck it all in, and go back to art school.
What changed your mind?
I sobered up.
So you’re an art school drop-out?
Well, I went to Central Saint Martins for a year. Then I went to the London College of Fashion, then I got a job at a jeans shop in Croydon. I was very lazy though, and always had my mind on my music.
You’ve posed naked for magazine shoots - twice?
Growing up, I hated my body. When everyone would be taking their t-shirts off in summer, I was one of the guys who wouldn’t. Now, I take my clothes off at any given opportunity. I figure if we get it out the way now, when I actually release a sex tape it won’t be that much of a biggee.
Three Little Words is out today. Frankmusik plays the Wonky Pop Xmas party at Matter on Friday, £15, www.ticketweb.com
