Frankmusik - Complete Me album review

The new king of electro? This often mohawked Croydon man is the next big thing - as his debut album shows

Rating: 4/5

While guitars lie around gathering slut-wool in neglected corners, synthesisers are on a non-stop hen-party conga of excess.Frankmusik, aka Croydon’s Vincent Frank, is the latest to join the electro knees-up of 2009.

At his best, like on pop bullet Better Off As Two, the 24-year-old is like a one-man Daft Punk fully in touch with his human side.

Electronic artists are usually better off as two, and Vince’s right-hand man on his debut is producer Stuart Price, the fellow responsible for Madonna’s last good record, Confessions on a Dancefloor.

When You’re Around sticks a bolt of lightning up the bum of The Stranglers’ Golden Brown – weird but it works.

3 Little Words is an uproarious shock, a song about man’s inability to communicate feelings wrapped in an impenetrable meteor shower of lasers, beats and pulses. Boyfriend has the sparkling production brilliance of a Fabergé egg, but, sadly, cat-sat-on-the-mat lyrical simplicity.

The often mohawked man does a nice line in hyper-ballads; Your Boy in the lungs of Leona could be a syrupy weep-a-thon, but stacked against Frank’s furious drum machines and stuttery walls of synthy sounds it becomes something altogether epic.

Early accusations that Frankmusik was the next Mika were greatly exaggerated, but the bright Confusion Girl, with its falsetto and string arrangements, does bounce in the general direction of the mop-topped popper. While the annoyingly empowering Wonder Woman has a nasty whiff of Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) – “Even Wonder Woman gets her nails done,” he sings before skipping further down the patronising path with, “behind every wonder woman is a pretty lonesome heart”. Pardon me while I vom down my V-neck.

But you can forgive these minor irritants; with electronic music you have to take the blips with the bleeps.
