You Don’t Mess With The Zohan

So, who’s up for Adam Sandler as an Israeli special forces soldier faking his death so he can reinvent himself as a hairdresser in New York? And here’s the kicker: he can only get a job in a Palestinian-owned salon! It’s roughly as stupid and crass as you’re probably imagining – hell, Rob Schneider even pops up as an Arab cab driver. Might raise a smirk or two if you’re in the mood for wrongness, but with the real-world Israeli-Palestinian tussle currently being far from a laughing matter, the timing ain’t great.

For a more jagged jolt of homegrown horror, see rising superstar Michael Fassbender in this crass but creepy Brit version of Deliverance. A nice, middle-class couple head up north for an idyllic camping trip. He plans to whip out an engagement ring when the time’s right, but then they’re teased – and terrorised – by a band of local louts. We blame the parents, who are worse than the kids (particularly the demonic dad). Big shout to chief chav Jack O’Connell (Pukey in This Is England) for the most chillingly believable horror-child performance since Ellen Page in Hard Candy.
