RICKY GERVAIS is a gloomy dentist who nearly dies during a routine operation. Turns out he’s in a state of semi-limbo where he can see dead people. Greg Kinnear is one of them and he convinces Gervais to stop his widow (Tea Leoni) from remarrying. It’s a lot smarter and funnier than it sounds, with Gervais’s sarky, semi-improvised style meshing deliciously with the frothy rom-com styling. It clunks a little when he’s required to dial down the twinkle and play it serious, but Gervais nails a notoriously tricky cultural crossover. Don’t miss the terrific DVD commentary from Gervais and Kinnear, where Kinnear tries to be a good, honest professional while Gervais insists that it doesn’t matter what they say because no one is listening.

Pride And Glory

CINEMA’S least likeable man Ed Norton stars with cinema’s most miscast man Colin Farrell as a dour duo of NY cops nosing and scowling through a vaguely Michael Mann-ish police corruption scandal. Is their off-the-peg grizzled boss Jon Voight involved? Is there a tiring reliance on chest-beating and binge-drinking? Can you safely skip it and not leave any kind of gap in your movie knowledge? Yes, yes and yes.
