CASSANDRA’S DREAM
*
In Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories, his film director is visited by super-intelligent aliens. “Should I carry on making movies?” he asks. The aliens: “We enjoy your films, particularly the early, funny ones.” It’s a gag that scrapes closer to the bone with every film Allen phones in. Here, Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor stumble around London, charged with carrying out a hit for their uncle, Tom Wilkinson. It’s muddled, embarrassing, and only exists because of Allen’s stature.
MONGOL
***
Comically ultra-violent Russian epic, part one in a trilogy telling of Mongol warrior Genghis Khan’s rise and rule. The claret flows as freely as the artistic licence and, for anyone who’s sat through The Lord Of The Rings, the muddy CG hordes feel a little cut-price. But, with only sketchy history to work from, director Sergei Bodrov makes a decent fist of keeping the action cranked while filling in the blanks.
MADE OF HONOUR
*
Rancid romcom about a slick, likeable-rogue type (Patrick Dempsey) overacting as pre-nuptial support to Michelle Monaghan’s ditzy, off-the-peg bride-to-be. Naturally, he falls for her and has to find a way to scupper the wedding. It’s so synthetic, jaunty and candyflossy, it makes Sex And The City feel like a Michael Haneke film.
