Apples - Richard Milward

He might be called Adam, and she is Eve, but the two narrators in Apples are a long way from any earthly paradise.

This couple of Middlesbrough teenagers endure bad drugs, violence, date rape, teen pregnancy and alcopop abuse. Here, the forbidden fruit is dispensed, in pill form, by a swaggering drug dealer. Beautiful Eve charms her way through house parties and nightclubs; Adam is smart but shy, afflicted with obsessive compulsive disorders, and besotted with Eve.

What elevates Apples above so many other stories of teen misadventure is Milward’s deft characterisation and authentic vernacular. There’s no glee in his prose, describing the sleazier side of teen life. Heartbreaking, honest and accurate, Apples reads like the book of Genesis recreated on the set of Shameless.

Richard Milward’s debut novel, Apples, is a tough, explicit yet tender coming-of-age story about teenagers Adam and Eve.
