A TOP academic today called on Londoners to vote in "probably the most important election ever" in the capital.

Tony Travers, director of the Greater London Group at the London School of Economics, said turnout was key as Boris Johnson and Ken Livingstone fight it out for the City Hall hotseat.

The pair have pulled well ahead of Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick who is trailing with less than 15 per cent of the vote, according to polls. Most polls show the pair virtually neck and neck and he urged Londoners to make their voice heard.

He said: "This is probably the most important election in London in modern times. Turnout will be key in such a close race and that's why Londoners should vote – it's hugely important.

"None of the other mayoral elections has been close and that's why this one is fascinating and important.

"London is a very plural place and I'm sure people will do the right thing and go to the ballot box, it's never been more important."

The last mayoral election had a turnout of 37 per cent and Travers said he is hoping that will be outstripped because "that race was never as close as this one".

The race for London Mayor is now in the final straight with polling stations across the capital preparing for millions of Londoners on Thursday. At least 700,000 of London's 5.5 million electorate is expected to vote via the postal voting system. It will be the first time that London has used the new and controversial procedure.
