iTunes vs eTunes
iTunes vs eTunes
From the print edition of thelondonpaper
Music fans will be able to download tracks for just 17p after a rival was launched today to take on iTunes.
At present iTunes dominates the download business in the UK and charges 79p for a single track.
But a new download service from eMusic unveiled across Europe threatens to unseat Apple’s service.
Unlike other music download services, eMusic’s content can be used for all music players, including the bestselling iPod, because all its songs are offered in MP3 format.
According to eMusic, which favours independent music, it has already doubled its market share in the US in the past year and now threatens to smash the iTunes monopoly.
Steve McCauley, European President of eMusic, said:
“eMusic looks forward to giving the 30 million-plus iPod owners in Europe a choice about the type of music they buy and where they buy it.”
But whereas iTunes users pay 79p a track, subscribers to emusic.com can get songs from as little as 17p each.
eMusic users can choose between three subscription packages, with the basic one offering 40 songs a month for £8.99 (22p a song).
