City workers witnessed a spectacular fire this afternoon as fire crews tackled a huge blaze at a multi storey building due to be demolished in London.
Flames tore through the 11 storey tower close to the Barbican, soaring hundreds of feet into the air.
One witness said: "It was spectacular. The flames seemed to sweep up inside the scaffolding at great speed, making it look like that movie, 'The Towering Inferno.'"
"We were all glued to our windows watching it happen."
At 11.30am, six fire engines and 30 fire fighters arrived, and battled for more than an hour to control the blaze, at the Milton Court construction site.
A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said "Although the building has been used in the past by firemen for training, only workman were present on the site when the fire began.
"Luckily, there were no injuries and no damage to surrounding buildings."
Almost 50% of the damage to the building was from fire – the cause of which is being investigated.
