"Even Dita Von Teese has been to Bristol recently"

www.hotelduvin.com

What: Bristolian branch of the chic hotel chain. Although “chain” isn’t a bad word in this instance – apart from the fact that the rooms are all guaranteed with gorgeously squashy beds and rolltop baths, you’d think you were in an independent little hotel. Just the ticket.

Where: Near the Bristol waterfront in a restored collection of 18th-century warehouses.

Why: Eyewitness travel guides rate Bristol as one of the top world cities for 2009, and the recent Banksy exhibition only confirmed that. Even Dita Von Teese has been to open a branch of Harvey Nicks – now’s your time, too.

And: 40 rooms blending comfort and style (the warehouse theme is there throughout); and a great restaurant (and wine list) to boot.

But: Unfortunately on our stay, we had a bit of difficulty deciphering the wine list. Not being wine buffs, we asked for help – and were told by the bar staff that they were new, so didn’t know much better. But they gave us an extra large glass to make up for it.

How: Doubles from £145. First Great Western runs regular trains from Paddington to Bristol – Temple Meads is the central station, not Parkway.
