London Fashion Week turns 25
We talk to London Fashion Week's top designers from Henry Holland to Matthew Williamson and Paul Smith
10 September 2009
LONDON Fashion Week will celebrate its 25th birthday next Friday, when the biannual catwalk shows kick off another sartorial season.
To celebrate a quarter-century of London being a fashion super-power, Elle magazine has commissioned 25 designers to each create a commemorative poster to be unveiled on the Underground from tomorrow. Central London stations will receive glamorous wall-hangings thanks to the talents of artists who have helped shape the city’s scene during that time.
Luella Bartley, Matthew Williamson and Naomi Campbell are among those to contribute. Here, we take a look at some of the poster designs and hear musings on what direction LFW will go in the next 25 years.
Matthew Williamson
“London has a wealth of good fashion schools and colleges which produce students who are creative and ground-breaking in their designs. The next 25 years will hopefully see the same level of encouragement and support so that our hot-bed of talent can flourish.”
Clare Waight Keller, Pringle
“More excitement, more creativity, and more spontaneity than any other fashion week in the world - London is where it happens!”
Paul Smith
“Hopefully my poster is full of optimism and has also got a link between fashion and our famous Underground network and map. I hope the future of fashion in Britain in the next 25 years continues to be full of creativity as London definitely is a goldmine of talent.”
Inacio Ribeiro, Clements Ribeiro
“In the next 25 years clothes will change colour and temperature. They will be self-cleaning and laser-sewn. And there will be a huge Noughties revival.”
Christopher Bailey for Burberry
“London is the heart of this
global luxury brand and the centre of all our creativity. We are so excited to be showing during LFW’s 25th anniversary.”
Richard Nicoll
“I hope that all of the amazing new talent will be thriving and showing [at LFW] as a result of the importance of this city – for business as well as creativity.”
Henry Holland, House of Holland
“When I think of 25 years of London Fashion Week, I realise I am as old as Fashion Week and nowhere near as accomplished. It makes me sad!”
Luella Bartley, Luella
“With the support of the British Fashion Council, I hope creativity, mixed with commercial support, will thrive and LFW will continue to grow and retain it’s position as a leading epicentre of fashion.”
Emma Hill, Mulberry
“Simply 25 more years as the style capital of the world!”
