Our tips for the best lipstick effects

Like to try bright lips, but don’t know where to start? We ask lipstick expert Poppy King for her tips for a perfect pout

Which shade suits me?

Fair skin: Bright pillarbox red

Olive skin: Bright pink and purple tones

Dark skin: Orange and orange reds

Is there one bright lipstick that suits all skin tones?

Believe it or not, corals look good on most skin tones. Not orange, but coral, which is a little more peachy.

Fear factor

Why do you think women are afraid of bright lip colour? Muted make-up has been in for a long time, so it’s a shock returning to bright lip colours. The last time they were this bold was the 60s. I think women are scared of looking too retro or overdone as beauty is less stiff these days.

How can I wear bright lip colours without feeling self-conscious?

1. Minimise the rest of your make-up, don’t use too much colour anywhere else. Make the lips the feature.

2. Wear it around the house to get used to it. Then it won’t be such a shock to see yourself in public.

3. Minimise patterns close to face, so the lip colour looks chic instead of crazy. Ditto for jewellery – less is definitely more.

Staying power

What’s the secret to smudge-proof and lunch-proof lipstick? Blot! Apply one coat of lipstick and then blot again. Wait a minute so the colour soaks in and then apply another light coat on top. You can also use concealer around the outside lip line before you apply the colour, to help stop it bleeding.
