Get on the wing! A fullproof guide to pulling girls with your pal

Love: It's a wing thing

SO you’ve caught the eye of a sexy girl by the bar and the next step is to go over and say “hi”. The only problem is, you know it means landing your buddy with her Not-Anywhere-Near-As-Fit best mate.

But rather than run a mile, you already know your mate will be happy to “take one for the team” and leave you to work your magic – it’s called playing wingman. David Walliams recently did the honours for Russell Brand, allowing the comedian to pick up two giggling blondes at a Cavendish Square nightclub. Brand left with the girls, while Walliams tactfully left the club alone at a suitable point.

Stateside, it’s a well-practised art. The wingman skills of The Hills star Brody Jenner and his mate Frankie Delgado have become so notorious, they filmed a “Wingman’s Guide” for a US entertainment site.

Both you and your wingman know he’s not really interested in the hot girl’s friend. But if it means you’ll have a better shot at pulling the hot girl, he’s happy to oblige. So long as you are prepared to take the role in turns, there is no reason why it won’t work in your local pick-up joint.

A wingman’s art can be highly effective when done right, says Matthew Hussey of date-coaching site puatraining.com. “You don’t need to know all the technicalities of pulling it off, but you do need to know the rules.”

Want to know how to work it with a wingman? Here are Matthew’s top tips:

Rule 1

Your wingman should be your biggest ally

They are there to help you, so no egos. If your mate can keep his ego in check, you will have someone there who will keep the conversation flowing.

Rule 2

Your wingman is a personal reflection on you

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that your wingman should be less attractive than you. The sharper your wingman, the better you look for hanging out with them.

Rule 3

Approach anyone you fancy alone

This shows confidence in your own abilities. Your wingman should come into the conversation after a couple of minutes.

Rule 4

Make sure your wingman comes over for a plausible reason

For instance, “I’m going to order a couple of drinks. What would you like?” This way, it won’t look like he’s just come to join in on the action. He can then come into your conversation seamlessly with: “I’m sorry I just interrupted you. That was rude. I’m Richard,” and proceed to talk to the guy or girl you’re not after.

Rule 5

Not chatting anyone up? Have fun with your wing

Remember, you are the party and other people should want a piece of you. All you need to do is make it happen.
