You asked: I can’t smell, taste or stop sneezing at the moment. My hay fever tablets aren’t helping, what else can I do?

Dr Anjlee Sheth: Having problems with smell, taste and sneezing is related to hypersensitivity of the lining of your nose, and to some extent your mouth.

Regular high doses of nasal drops or sprays, either antihistamine-based (sodium cromoglycate) or steroid-types (Beconase and Flixonase), will get the symptoms under control within a few days.

There are tablets and injections that modify your immune system and change the way you handle pollen – it’s a novel approach to allergies but useful for severe symptoms so ask your doctor about these.

However, make sure the culprit isn’t dust, pets, feathers or chemicals, which trouble some people in the same way as hay fever.
