Bono and co appeared between acts, joining African artist Baaba Maal on stage. Stealing the thunder of main headliner Yusuf Islam, formerly Cat Stevens, the Irish band provided acoustic baking for Maal’s version of their hit One.
Bono was his usual pontificating self, calling Maal the “spark of Africa” and praising his “nobility”, before the pair launched into a rousing version of Bob Marley classic One Love.
U2 rounded off their unexpected appearance with another of their hits, Vertigo, thanking their former record label at the end.
