AND you thought The Joker was scary. Johnny Depp takes a leaf out of the Batman franchise's book in his next role as The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland books.

Joining him at his famous tea party are Noah Taylor – who starred alongside him in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – as the March Hare, and Barbara Windsor as the Dormouse. A relative unknown, 19-year-old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, plays Alice.

Lewis Carroll's trippy 19th century children's classics should be an ideal match for Burton's creepy fairytale style. The film will combine performance-capture imagery, currently seen in Beowulf, with live-action footage. British talent joining Depp includes Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and Christopher Lee as the terrifying Jabberwock.

Helena Bonham Carter plays the capricious Red Queen, while Anne Hathaway plays the more timid White Queen.

And while Disney's famous cartoon version went for a more dippy sweetness and humour, you can expect more along the lines of Burton's gothic stories Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Alice in Wonderland is out in 2010.
