Sam Mendes and Kevin Spacey team up to bring Shakespeare and Chekhov to the Old Vic

Stars including Ethan Hawke, Simon Russell Beale and Rebecca Hall will star in The Cherry Orchard and The Winter's Tale on both side of the Atlantic

FILM director and Kate Winslet's other half Sam Mendes made his much-hyped return to London theatre last night - with his ambitious transatlantic double bill of Shakespeare and Chekhov.

In a unique hook-up between Kevin Spacey's Old Vic and the acclaimed Brooklyn Academy of Music, Mendes has created 'The Bridge Project' - two plays boasting a star-studded cast of Brits and Americans and performed across the globe.

Yesterday the actors, including Ethan Hawke, Simon Russell Beale, Rebecca Hall and Sinead Cusack, performed an epic double of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale and Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard for the official London opening.

They will appear in both productions on alternate days at the Waterloo venue throughout the summer.

The project is a huge deal in theatreland. Before Mendes became an Oscar-winning movie-maker, he was artistic director of London's Donmar Warehouse, turning it into a powerhouse of British theatre. This marks his first London theatre project, as director, since he left the Donmar in 2003.
