Review of Beyoncé at The O2 Arena

Sasha Fierce was on fire but please bin those ballads, Beyoncé

IN many ways Beyoncé is the queen bee by which the new breed of post-millennial stars must be judged.

She is a force of nature; a beautiful, supremely talented songwriter, singer and performer and, when she plays the Amazonian diva Sasha Fierce, she is brilliant to watch.

But when she goes off on her big American ballad thing (Listen excluded) it’s time to visit the loo or buy another pint. Last night was a four-loo-visits-and-three-pints kinda time. Thankfully, when she was belting out hits like Crazy In Love in a Thierry Mugler corset or Baby Boy dangling from a high wire above the audience or doing the iconic Single Ladies video dance before our very eyes, she was on fire.

The 27-year-old Texan’s songs may not be consistently A+, but her ever-expanding catalogue, including her Destiny’s Child hits - a medley of which she squeezed in far too swiftly - is still impressive. But why she left out songs like Green Light and Work It Out in favour of weak ballads performed sub-Vegas style in front of screens of crashing waves and in an oversized wedding dress is anyone’s guess – or perhaps her therapist's.
