The idea of notoriously touchy Blur guitarist Graham Coxon pretending to be an insect on stage should be reason alone to get you running to the Southbank Centre’s Pestival this weekend. But it’s not the only mind-boggling prospect on the line-up

Prepare yourself for the sound of a human/cricket duet and a choir harmonising with a swarm of Kentish honey bees.

It’s sure to be just as novel as the spectacle of Graham Coxon playing insect-related songs (including Wire’s I Am A Fly) with added clicks, hissings and rubbings alongside Robyn Hitchcock, Alessi’s Ark and other usually too-cool-for-school bands.

Meanwhile, Robin Ince and Garth Marenghi will attempt to wring comedy gold out of hot entymological topics, and there will be a giant walk-in “termite mound” complete with appropriate recorded soundtrack, as well as talks, film screenings, an insect zoo and lots more.

The whole, brilliant extravaganza has a point: to remind us of the importance and diversity of insect life.
