Patrick Swayze remembered - best movie moments

He may not have been the greatest actor of his generation but this one-time hearthtrob has left behind a legacy of pulse-racing scenes for us all to enjoy in movies such as Dirty Dancing, Ghost and Point Break

15 September 2009

We knew it was probably inevitable, but that doesn’t soften the blow. Women around the world will be mourning the passing of everyone’s favourite dirty dancer.

He may not have starred in any memorable films for about ten years or so but that doesn’t stop us getting all dewy eyed over classic such as Ghost, DD and Point Break. You might have watched them all many times before, and be able to sing Hungry Eyes backwards, but here are Patrick’s best bits.

Dirty Dancing, 1987

The film that brought Patrick, and his amazing moves, to the world’s attention and turned him from relative unknown to international heartthrob. Strangely, it didn’t have the same impact on the career of his snozzlicious co-star, Jennifer Grey, despite her uttering the brilliant line “I carried a watermelon.”

Roadhouse (1989)

Swayze won a Worst Actor Award, aka a Razzie, for this couch potato classic in which he plays Dalton, a super tough bar bouncer with a background in philosophy. And no, it wasn’t a comedy.

Ghost (1990)

Another one for the girls. This weepy classic saw Swayze and a pre-surgery Demi Moore getting jiggy with each other over a pottery wheel. Nobody really remembers much else about the film except the fact that Swazye’s character pop his clogs and comes back to save his grieving girlfriend from various baddies. Whoopi Goldberg provides most of the, much-needed, laughs.

Point Break, 1991

Possibly Swayze’s finest moment. His turn as philosophising surfer/bank robber dude Bhodi was the highlight of this action-packed classic which also starred a hilariously wooden Keanu reeves. The skydiving scene is, like, totally, awesome.

Donnie Darko, 2001

This is a five-star film for loads of reasons, not least the casting of Swazye as creepy motivational speaker Jim Cunningham. Proving that his success was based on more than just a pretty face and some fancy footwork, Swayze won raves for his performance. The scene where Donnie uncovers Cunningham’s kiddie porn dungeon is sheer cinematic brilliance.

The Beast (2009)

This FBI-themed TV series was to be Swayze’s final on-screen role. Although battling pancreatic cancer throughout, he turns in an impressive performance as a hard-edged agent who imparts his wisdom and cynicism to his young partner (Travis Fimmel). Although not an obvious weepy it’s hard not to shed a tear over Swayze’s reduced form.
