Moby, Patti Smith and Baaba Maal to headline Meltdown festival
27 April 2009
EXPERIMENTAL alt rockers Yo La Tengo, Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal and the first ever British performance by the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band are highlights of this summer's Meltdown Festival.
The annual Southbank Centre event, curated each year by a different music legend, is this year organised by Free Jazz icon Ornette Coleman.
The American jazz innovator - who has inspired the likes of Lou Reed, Spiritualized and Sonic Youth - will himself play two concerts on 19 and 21 June.
Also on the eclectic bill are Philadelphia hip hop outfit The Roots, sax and clarinet virtuoso David Murray, Sean Lennon, Moby, Patti Smith and Robert Wyatt.
Says Moby: "I can't think of anyone alive who's pushed things as far and as hard as Ornette Coleman. His approach to music is a big inspiration to me."
Tickets go on sale to Southbank members this Wednesday 29 April at 10am and on general sale on 30 April at www.southbankcentre.co.uk/meltdown and 0871 663 2520.
Previous Meltdown curators have included Massive Attack, Jarvis Cocker, Morrissey and David Bowie.
