Highlights from Day One on the fourth plinth
Antony Gormley's One and Other project gets under way in Trafalgar Square
6 July 2009
It’s been a busy day up on the fourth plinth. We’ve had protests, charitable displays, town criers and an ordinary bloke up there.
The start, scheduled for 9am, was delayed while an anti-tobacco protester was forcibly ejected from the statue, then housewife Rachel Wardell became the first “living sculpture”, holding aloft a giant green lollipop in support of the NSPCC.

Nurse Jason Clark stood stock still for an hour portraying an “ordinary British man”, which sounds dull but was strangely fascinating. Then charitable Jill Gatcum, a 51-year-old IT consultant from London, released a balloon every minute to raise money for good causes.
Then there was Scott Illman, who dressed up as a town crier to promote his bar. No we didn’t get it either. And artist Christine Sharman, who defied the bad weather and attempted to sketch her surroundings.
The unfortunately named Steve Pratt was on a mission to give his 20 month-old grandson something to “remember him by” - a noble endeavour which saw him hold up a blackboard saying “ I am not a pigeon” before he changed it to "Stop staring".
Highlights tonight include university lecturer Stephen Roser from Bristol, who has promised to throw chocolates into the crowd from 9pm.
