THE new Harry Potter film is on track to become the most successful movie in UK cinema history after it set a box-office record on the opening night.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince took more than £4.7m in ticket sales, giving it the best Wednesday opening night in Britain ever.

It beat the previous Wednesday record of £3m, held by the third installment of the wizard’s adventures, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Cinema chain Cineworld reported more than 150,000 admissions as fans flocked to see the film, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, while at the BFI IMAX cinema in Waterloo, 26,000 tickets have already been sold.

Next week the venue will be showing the movie – the sixth in JK Rowling’s series – four times a day to meet demand. The version being screened there contains 12 minutes of 3D effects.

Hundreds of thousands of Londoners are expected to watch the movie over the next three days, as the Half-Blood Prince approaches the mark for the best-ever UK opening weekend, held by James Bond film Quantum of Solace.

Jack Warner, of magazine Screen International, said: "Harry Potter is in another league when it comes to box-office figures and is on the way to becoming the most successful film franchise in the history of cinema."

The Harry Potter films have so far taken £2.75bn worldwide. Only the Bond franchise, with a figure of £3.06bn, has made more.
