Gig review of La Roux live at KOKO

Pointy-haired electro-pop queen and daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin aka The Bill's June Ackland goes In For The Kill

3/5 stars

I was warned I would rue the day I saw La Roux live. Well, it wasn’t as bad as all that.

Although, when she asked for people to put their lighters up during ballad Cover My Eyes an actual fistfight broke out. Where are the Old Bill when you need them? Er, watching from the wings, or at home with her feet up - La Roux’s mum is long serving Bill actress Trudie Goodwin, aka Sgt June Ackland.

Pop’s latest bright light played her biggest gig yet for the final night of NME’s Radar Tour for up and coming talent. The weekly music mag certainly got that right. La Roux, real name Ellie Jackson, has been in the top five for weeks with her cobweb - shaking ethereal electro song In For the Kill.

Far from being a one hit wonder the pointy - haired singer had more potential hits hidden about her person than cans of Elnet.

Fascination, Quicksand and next single Bulletproof were best, but the 21-year-old Londoner took a little warming up, performing early songs shyly.

Her high pitched voice divides opinion and is probably best appreciated coming out of a pair of headphones – it loses some of the pristine clarity live - but when she finally sang In For The Kill there was something brilliant about 1,400 men and women straining to sing along like neutered Chihuahuas.
