Enrico David, Roger Hiorns and Lucy Skaer make the shortlist for the Turner Prize 2009
28 April 2009
IS it a balloon, is it a man, is it a, er, sledge?
Yes, folks, it's Turner Prize nominations time again - and this sculptural oddity is by one of the frontrunners, 43-year-old Italian Enrico David.
The London-based artist's work is a surreal parade of silhouettes, papier-mache eggmen and vibrant large scale embroidered portraits.
This bulbous chap featuered in a solo show, How Do You Love Dzzzzt by Mammy?, which confronted "the uncertainty... encountered all through life".

The Turner shortlist names four artists - with the winner of the prestigious award set to be announced in December.
The others include 34-year-old Brit Roger Hiorns, who caused a stir last year with his work Seizure, when he filled a disused bed-sit in an abandoned Elephant & Castle council block with liquid copper sulphate, which gradually encrusted every surface with vivid blue crystals.
Fellow Brit Lucy Skaer, 34, is nominated for her drawings, sculpture and films, as well as works involving public spaces. She once took up a paving stone in Glasgow and had the Earl of Glasgow ceremoniously lay down a replacement. In Amsterdam, meanwhile, she left a diamond and a scorpion side-by-side on the street.
The sculptures in her work Solid Ground are 3-D pieces of coloured plaster based on the ink blots used in psychological tests.
London-born artist Richard Wright, 49, is nominated for his "subtle and exquisite wall paintings" - including this seemingly invisible work in an alcove, which features tiny gold markings dotted across the backs of the shelves.
Works by all four nominees will go on show at Tate Britain this October.
Previous Turner Prize winners have included Mark Wallinger, Grayson Perry and Damien Hirst.
