National Theatre shows rise of radical Islam
Hanif Kureishi has adapted his acclaimed 1995 novel "The Black Album" for the National Theatre to shed light on life post-9/11
13 July 2009
A NEW play about the rise of radical Islam will get its premiere at the National Theatre this week.
Penned by Hanif Kureishi, it is based on his acclaimed 1995 second novel "The Black Album".
The book is set in 1989 and follows a young, Kent-born Pakistani university student pulled between two cultures: the liberal western lifestyle of his fellow undergraduates and the religious life lived by his devout Muslim roommate.
Says Kureishi: "[I] thought my pre-7/7 novel might shed some light on some of the things that have happened since."
