Clash guitarist Mick Jones stages free 'guerilla' rock 'n roll library
The Clash guitarist aims to rival corporate music exhibitions by putting his personal collection on show, which features everything from Clash artwork to Beatles memorabilia
16 July 2009
THE Clash guitarist Mick Jones is staging his own, free "guerilla rock 'n roll public library" - in a bid to challenge the 'blandness' of other music museums.
In a 3,000sq ft disused office space beneath the Westway, he is showing off his personal, 10,000-strong collection of everything from The Clash artwork to stagewear and original Beatles ephemera.
"It's a direct artistic challenge to the likes of the corporate British Music Experience," he says.
The five week "civic endeavour" will also allow visitors to interact with the exhibition, and scan certain objects and, via a memory stick, take them away.
The collection has been built up over nearly 40 years, since well before Jones formed The Clash in 1976.
It's the first time his full archive has been shown in public, following a smaller showing at the Chelsea Space earlier this year.
Librarians from Kensington & Chelsea have even been employed temporarily to work as 'rock 'n roll librarians', with a series of educational outreach programmes also planned.
Rock 'n Roll Public Library, 18 July - 25 August, 2 Acklam Road, Portobello Green, W10 5XL, 0207 792 9626, Ladbroke Grove Underground, 11am-7pm. Wednesday-Sunday (free.)
