COULD this be the first ever self-portrait by Banksy?

The stencil work, which has popped up on the side of a Shoreditch office block, is being hailed by some as the elusive street artist's confession that he is, in fact, a former public schoolboy.

It features his trademark 'rat in a necklace' holding a placard bearing the face of a bespectacled man.

The image appears to be a copy of a photograph of Robin Gunningham, 35 - previously "outed" by the press as Banksy.

Gunningham is a former pupil at the £9,240-a-year Bristol Cathedral School, whose last registered address was in Hackney.

So could this be Banksy's final coy unmasking?
