Union Square, The O2 Arena, SE10 0DX - review

The O2's flagship American-themed bar is simply Yankee doodle dandy

2 September 2009

Rating: 3/5

In recent years, The O2 has hosted everyone from Beyoncé to the Chicago Bulls to pro wrestlers in day-glo spandex.

With such an American-heavy bill, it seems about right that the venue’s flagship bar and restaurant Union Square – newly launched in the dome’s central concourse – should take the US as its theme.

It isn’t subtle. The walls of the downstairs bar and upstairs dining room are crammed with art depicting scenes of the rural American west (horses galloping, cattle grazing, native Indians looking noble and doomed). This is apparently just a fraction of the owner’s extensive collection of such pieces.

Otherwise, we know this is an American bar because of the wall-to-ceiling mahogany, the place settings along the long horseshoe bar inviting diners to eat at the counter, the Budweiser on tap and the name harking to one of New York’s most famous piazzas.

Rich food includes “New York” strip steak and above-average hamburgers, costly at £26 and £14 respectively.

But the impressively massive wine list has 30 bottles of each colour, including a page dedicated to American offerings, and about a quarter are available by the glass from £4.

It’s garish, a little brash, but Union Square currently stands as the best option for a drink in The O2.

Mosey on in, as they’d say.
