Fancy a tipple of green wine?
You can drink with a clean conscience thanks to Organic Wine Fortnight. Alistair Smith puts these luscious vinos to the test
2 September 2009
Kicking off this weekend is Organic Wine Fortnight. So what, say you? Well, lagging a little behind the food world, “organic” has become the latest buzzword to hit vino in recent months – and the results are pretty tasty. They’re also widely available, with Waitrose boasting a particularly impressive range.
So why not pop a cork of one of the below: two red, two white, one rosé, all green? And none costs the earth.
Bellane Cotes du Rhone Villages 2007
A text-book southern Rhone red. Ripe red fruit, a little spice and full of the warmth and aromas of Provence. A bargain as well.
Tesco, £6.99
Mareante Hill Chardonnay 2007
Fruity, luscious Chilean chardonnay full of tropical pineapple with a thick, creamy and not too oaky finish. Very gluggable.
Marks & Spencer, £6.99
Monty’s Wines
If you saw Channel 4 series Chateau Monty, you’ll know Monty Waldin – the wine critic who decamped to France to set up his own vineyard. These are his wines – all of them organic and bloody tasty. Monty’s French Red 2007 is the pick of the bunch. It’s a surprisingly smooth, bright and dangerously drinkable Carignan blend. His Dry French White 2008 is also eminently quaffable.
Adnams (020 8940 8684) and Roberson (020 7371 2121), £8.99
Bonterra Organic Rosé 2008
Decent organic rosés are a little thin on the ground, but this juicy off-dry number from California is on offer at Waitrose and represents great value.
Waitrose, £5.99 till 27 September
