1981 McEnroe loses the plot
John McEnroe is a much-loved presence at SW19 these days, but there was a time when the abrasive American was known only as “Super Brat”. His tantrums – thrown during his late 1970s and 1980s pomp – are arguably as memorable as his seven grand slam wins. His most famous rant came during a second round match in 1981 when he disagreed with umpire Ted James and screamed: “You cannot be serious!” It became McEnroe’s catchphrase, the title
of his autobiography, and he won the championship that year.

1987 Pat Cash wins Wimbledon
When most players win Wimbledon they burst out crying or sink to their knees. Not Pat Cash. Having seen off world No1 Ivan Lendl in the final, Cash walked off court, climbed up the stand, and into the players’ box so he could celebrate his solitary grand slam win with friends, family, girlfriend and coach. Often copied since, but Cash was first.

1996 Cliff Richard to the rescue
“We’ll probably get one hell of a bill,” was BBC anchor Des Lynam’s deadpan response after Cliff Richard had serenaded a rainsoaked Centre Court. A typical, torrential downpair meant tennis was out of the question, so up stepped Sir Cliff to gamely reel off hits such as Summer Holiday, The Young Ones and Bachelor Boy – with female tennis stars Pam Shriver, Hana Mandlikova and Virginia Wade as backing dancers – to keep the punters happy.

2008 The greatest final of all time
His great rival, Rafael Nadal, stood in the way of Roger Federer achieving sporting immortality with a sixth straight Wimbledon win – only he and Bjorn Borg had managed five. The two titans went to and fro for five epic sets but, after four hours and 48 minutes, it was Nadal, the firebrand from Majorca, who was the last man standing.
